[August 20] Some Mining Changes

Updated: 2024/August 20

Hello,

Today we are bringing a small update to Alpha with a couple of changes to mining.

Day 1 Changes

  • The Crystal Nucleus RNG Meter will give a small amount of retroactive XP, based upon how many runs you've completed.
  • Golden Dragon Pet's 'Shining Scales' perk will now cap out at 100 million gold instead of 1 billion. The maximum stats earned are still the same, you just earn them faster.
  • Specific Mining Fortunes, such as Gemstone Fortune, will be hidden from the main SkyBlock Profile in the same way farming's numerous fortune stats are, though you can still view specific fortunes in the stats breakdown.
  • /warp forge will be adjusted to make the player face Fred instead of a dangerously positioned lava pool (probably a safety hazard).
  • King Yolkar's dialogue will be sped up for players who have completed a Crystal Nucleus run previously.
  • Bal will respawn faster and all players who contributed will be allowed to claim the Topaz Crystal (previously only those who received Bestiary progression could claim). These changes may not have been implemented at the time of reading, but are on their way. More to come!

► Crystal Hollows Access[]

  • Requires HotM III > IV

Designer's Note: Now that the Mining Skill has 3 distinct areas, we thought it would be appropriate to rebalance progression so that it more evenly spreads across them. This change was not made lightly, countless other changes have been made to account for this.

► Gemstone Gauntlet Revamp[]

  • Breaking Power: 9 > 8
  • Damage: 200 > +300
  • Strength: 0 > +50
  • Mining Speed: 1600 > +800
  • New Passive: Reduced To Atoms Mobs killed on Mining Islands now drop Gemstones when killed with Gemstone Gauntlets. What Gemstones they drop correlate to the Gemstones that you have on your Gauntlet. Killing these mobs also charges your Gauntlet Meter by 1.
  • New Passive: Kinetic Mobs killed on Mining Islands will now reduce the timers on all your Forge Slots by a certain amount of time when killed with Gemstone Gauntlets. The amount of time scales by 0.5s for each Perfect Gemstone you have slotted within your Gauntlet.
  • New Ability: Gemstone Snap The Gauntlet Meter stores up to 150 charges (150 mob kills). Once fully charged, you may Shift Right Click with the item to drain your meter, giving you +50 Mining Fortune for 60m. This effect does not stack.

Designer's Note: This is a big one. The Gemstone Gauntlet has long been problematic in mining's progression. Most player's never even interact with Drills, and we don't love that. Drill Parts and Fuel are systems we want the player to interact with more as they progress in mining, and currently that just isn't the case until late in the game. To coincide with these changes, we will also be reducing the cost for many Drills in the game and putting more Gemstone Slots on Gemstone Drills. Drill Parts have also been largely buffed, so Drills should be more appealing to go for more than ever. That all being said, we still wanted the Gemstone Gauntlet to have some greater place in mining as a whole, so we are introducing some new abilities to the item in hopes of maintaining its relevancy in some regards.

► Crystal Nucleus RNG Meter[]

The Crystal Nucleus is finally receiving an RNG Meter. Each run will fill up your meter by 1,000 EXP, and you can set your drop to pretty much any non-Gemstone item. Below is a list of all the available items and their required runs.

  • Pickonimbus 2000: 4,000 EXP (4 runs)
  • Divan Fragment: 8,000 EXP
  • Prehistoric Egg: 8,000 EXP
  • Helix: 10,000 EXP
  • Ruby Crystal: 10,000 EXP
  • Jasper Crystal: 10,000 EXP
  • Jaderald: 20,000 EXP
  • Gemstone Mixture: 35,000 EXP
  • Fortune IV: 35,000 EXP
  • Precious Pearl: 50,000 EXP
  • Claw Fossil: 50,000 EXP
  • Recall Potion: 100,000 EXP
  • Quick Claw: 450,000 EXP
  • Divan's Alloy: 1,000,000 EXP

In addition, we have done away with the old dynamic drop rate system that the original Divan's Alloy had. This is now changing to a 1 in 17,000 rolls, which is roughly 1 in 1,000 runs (less if you have the Mole Pet and High Roller Diamond Essence Shop perk).

► Pure Ores[]

We have renamed the Dwarven Ores (such as Dwarven Gold) into "Pure Ores". Their functionality remains unchanged.

In addition to this, we have added Pure variants of all the remaining vanilla ores. This includes Coal, Iron, Lapis, Redstone, Emerald, and Diamond. These can now all be found in the Royal Mines zone of the Dwarven Mines. It should be much easier now to collect large amounts of these resources!

► 7 New Stats[]

➥ Mining Spread[]

This stat is your chance to mine an additional non-Gemstone block. Stacking over 100 Mining Spread guarantees you mine an additional block, and starts working towards the next block, similar to Fortune stats. Having 450 Mining Spread means that you will mine 4 additional blocks for every block you mine, and there is a 50% chance for you to mine a 5th.

➥ Gemstone Spread[]

Works just like Mining Spread but is exclusive to Gemstones. This stat is compatible with Pristine, although is very difficult to come by to compensate.

➥ 4 New Sub Fortunes[]

Each of these types applies on top of standard Mining Fortune for affected blocks.

Affected By Ore Fortune

  • Coal Ore / Dwarven Coal (new!)
  • Iron Ore / Dwarven Iron (new!)
  • Gold Ore / Dwarven Gold
  • Lapis Ore / Dwarven Lapis (new!)
  • Redstone Ore / Dwarven Redstone
  • Emerald Ore / Dwarven Emerald
  • Diamond Ore / Dwarven Diamond (new!)

Affected By Block Fortune

  • Cobblestone / Stone
  • End Stone
  • Glowstone
  • Gravel / Flint
  • Hard Stone
  • Ice
  • Netherrack
  • Mycelium
  • Obsidian
  • Red Sand
  • Sand

Affected By Dwarven Metal Fortune

  • Mithril
  • Titanium
  • Umber
  • Tungsten
  • Glacite

Affected By Gemstone Fortune

  • No points for guessing

Designer's Note: Yes, this means blocks like Red Sand and Mycelium are now directly affected by Mining Fortune. We anticipate changes to costs and recipes will happen, but we want to see how things turn out first.

➥ Heat Resistance[]

For every 1 Heat Resistance you have, Heat will build up 1% slower while you are in the Magma Fields. The way Heat builds up has all been revamped.

Current System

+ While in the Magma Fields: +1 Heat/s

+ While in lava: +5 Heat/s

- While not in the Magma Fields: -0.5 Heat/s

- While in water: -1 Heat/s

- Drinking a water bottle: -40 Heat

New System

+ While in the Magma Fields: +0.1 Heat/s

+ While in Khazad-Dum: +0.2 Heat/s (takes priority over Magma Fields)

+ While on fire: +1 Heat/s

+ While in lava: +3 Heat/s (takes priority over fire)

- While not in the Magma Fields: -1 Heat/s

- While in water: -5 Heat/s

- Drinking any potion: -10 Heat

Designer's Note: These changes make it so that on average Heat will build up slower and disperse faster. This is to compensate for additional changes listed further in the thread, including the removal of the Heat Immunity mechanic from the Bal Pet and reintroduction of it onto a fairly underutilized armor set as an option for those who want it. That being said, having large amounts of Heat Resistance will make it take a pretty long while for Heat to build up to lethal levels. This is something we will actively be looking to balance.

► Heart of the Mountain Overhaul[]

Designer's Note: With the release of the Glacite Tunnels update, there are now 10 tiers to the Heart of the Mountain. Now that we have a better idea of what works and what doesn't, we are taking the time to overhaul the entirety of the tree to increase the diversity in builds players can spec into.

➥ Powder Costs[]

  • Mithril Powder: HotM I - III perks
  • Gemstone Powder: HotM IV - VII perks
  • Glacite Powder: HotM VIII - X perks

Designer's Note: This is one of the many changes being made in conjunction with the new Crystal Hollows HotM IV requirement. This puts the Heart of the Mountain directly in line with when you unlock new mining areas to explore. No more waiting until HotM VI to spend your Gemstone Powder!

Note: Perks are listed in order from left to right on the tree.

➥ Tier I[]

  • No changes

➥ Tier II[]

  • 1st Slot: Mining Speed Boost (Pickaxe Ability)
    • Level I
      • Effect: 200% > 150%
    • Level II
      • Effect: 300% > 200%
    • Level III
      • Effect: 400% > 250%

Designer's Note: Mining Speed Boost was far and away the best Pickaxe Ability for most players. This change, paired with buffs to the other Pickaxes abilities, should create a more level playing field.

  • 2nd Slot: Precision Mining
    • Moved from the 7th slot of HotM IV to here
    • Can now be upgraded (2o levels)
      • +5% + level%
      • Same cost scaling as Great Explorer
  • 3rd Slot: Mining Fortune
    • +5 > +2 Mining Fortune per level

Designer's Note: We have given back this Mining Fortune in new places. This was a change we made so that we can diversify how Mining Fortune is obtained.

  • 4th Slot: Titanium Insanium
    • Moved from the 2nd slot of HotM II to here
    • Functionality unchanged
  • 5th Slot: Pickobulus (Pickaxe Ability)

    • Level II
      • Radius: 2 > 2.5 Blocks
      • Cooldown: 110s > 50s
    • Level III
      • Radius: 3 > 2.5 Blocks
      • Cooldown: 100s > 40s

Designer's Note: We really liked the idea of some Pickaxe Abilities being more frequent in usage than others. If this turns out not to be enough for Pickobulus, we will look into further reducing its cooldown.

  • Disabled HotM perks now appear as Redstone Dust
  • You can no longer switch to a different Pickaxe Ability while you have one currently active or on cooldown

► The Forge[]

➥ More Forge Slots[]

  • Added a Forge Slot to HotM V, VI, and VII
  • Removed the Forge Slot from Core of the Mountain II
    • The +1 Pickaxe Ability level from Core of the Mountain I is moving to II to compensate

Designer's Note: With these changes players will be able to get 7 Forge Slots. We understand forge times can be a pain point, but we did not want to reduce timers across the board as it lessens the purpose of even having the Forge in the first place, so we are instead opting to add more slots.

➥ Forge Categorization[]

We have re-sorted all forgeable items into the following categories:

  • Refining (refined mithril, refined titanium, etc.)
  • Forging (mithril plates, gemstone mixtures, etc.)
  • Tools (drills, chisels, etc.)
  • Gear (armor, accessories, etc.)
  • Reforge Stones
  • Drill Parts (goblin omelettes, fuel tanks, etc.)
  • Perfect Gemstones
  • Pets (pets and pet items)
  • Other (anything we didn't want to create an entirely new category for, etc.)

We have also added a search button in case you can't find where something is!

➥ Forge Recipes[]

Are all your Forge Slots still somehow full even though we just added 2 more? No worries! (well not exactly...) Now you can access all of your unlocked Forge Recipes from the main menu.

  • Moved the Refined Mithril Pickaxe out of The Forge and into Bubu's Shop

Designer's Note: It's nice to have all the Pickaxes laid out for newer players in Bubu's Shop. This has a knock-on effect of letting NBT carry over to more upgrades now.

➥ Mining Reforge Stone Overhaul[]

Designer's Note: This is one of the places we are giving Mining Fortune back. Reforge Stones for Mining Tools are being entirely reworked, but also buffed significantly. The goal of this is to make sure each of them have a place at some point in the game.

Amber Material

Designer's Note: Amber Material is intended to be the BIS Reforge Stone for Mining Speed. It will give you the best odds at surpassing a tick threshold compared to all other Reforge Stones. The cost? No Mining Fortune whatsoever. As an added bonus, you will mine up Golden & Diamond Goblins significantly more frequently thanks to the new Ambered Bonus. Our hope is that this will synergize well enough with Luck of the Cave and Sky Mall to make Goblin mining feel more worth doing.

  • COMMON: +25 Mining Speed / +10% Ambered Bonus
  • UNCOMMON: +35 Mining Speed / +15% Ambered Bonus
  • RARE: +50 Mining Speed / +20% Ambered Bonus
  • EPIC: +75 Mining Speed / +25% Ambered Bonus
  • LEGENDARY: +100 Mining Speed / +30% Ambered Bonus
  • MYTHIC: +150 Mining Speed / +40% Ambered Bonus
  • DIVINE: +200 Mining Speed / +50% Ambered Bonus

Ambered Bonus: Discover Golden/Diamond Goblins +???% more often while mining.

Andesite Whetstone (renamed from Refined Amber)

Designer's Note: Andesite Whetstone has stayed largely the same here, it is still the BIS Reforge Stone for Mining Wisdom. The item has been renamed due to the fact that it was created before Amber existed as a resource. Now that Amber AND the Amber Material reforge stone exist, this item was due for a rebrand. Hopefully we never have to add an Andesite Collection. Or a Whetstone Collection.

  • COMMON: +1 Mining Wisdom / 0.1% Refined Bonus
  • UNCOMMON: +2 Mining Wisdom / 0.13% Refined Bonus
  • RARE: +3 Mining Wisdom / 0.16% Refined Bonus
  • EPIC: +4 Mining Wisdom / 0.19% Refined Bonus
  • LEGENDARY: +6 Mining Wisdom / 0.22% Refined Bonus
  • MYTHIC: +8 Mining Wisdom / 0.26% Refined Bonus
  • DIVINE: +10 Mining Wisdom / 0.3% Refined Bonus

Refined Bonus: Grants a ???% chance to drop the enchanted item when mining a block.

Black Diamond

Designer's Note: Black Diamond is still maintaining its spot as an early game Reforge Stone. The Defense it used to give has now been consolidated into a more powerful reforge bonus, while the base stats are now a nice split between Mining Speed and Fortune.

  • COMMON: +5 Mining Speed / +2 Mining Fortune / +25 Fruitful Bonus
  • UNCOMMON: +10 Mining Speed / +4 Mining Fortune / +30 Fruitful Bonus
  • RARE: +15 Mining Speed / +6 Mining Fortune / +35 Fruitful Bonus
  • EPIC: +25 Mining Speed / +8 Mining Fortune / +40 Fruitful Bonus
  • LEGENDARY: +40 Mining Speed / +10 Mining Fortune / +50 Fruitful Bonus
  • MYTHIC: +55 Mining Speed / +12 Mining Fortune / +60 Fruitful Bonus
  • DIVINE: +70 Mining Speed / +15 Mining Fortune / +70 Fruitful Bonus

Fruitful Bonus: Grants +??? Defense while on Mining Islands.

Diamonite

Designer's Note: Diamonite has had its focus shifted to Blocks affected by Mining Fortune, now being the BIS at that. The Fleet Bonus is interesting in that it grants Mining Spread on Blocks affected by Mining Fortune as well, which will pair nicely with all the new Dwarven Ore veins in the Royal Mines.

  • COMMON: +10 Mining Speed / +25 Block Fortune / +50 Fleet Bonus
  • UNCOMMON: +20 Mining Speed / +30 Block Fortune / +60 Fleet Bonus
  • RARE: +30 Mining Speed / +35 Block Fortune / +70 Fleet Bonus
  • EPIC: +40 Mining Speed / +45 Block Fortune / +85 Fleet Bonus
  • LEGENDARY: +50 Mining Speed / +55 Block Fortune / +100 Fleet Bonus
  • MYTHIC: +75 Mining Speed / +65 Block Fortune / +125 Fleet Bonus
  • DIVINE: +100 Mining Speed / +75 Block Fortune / +150 Fleet Bonus

Fleet Bonus: Grants +??? Mining Spread on Blocks.

Dwarven Geode (renamed from Rock Gemstone)

Designer's Note: Dwarven Geode is now a nice mix between Mining Speed and Fortune, although its reforge bonus can prove quite powerful in the later stages of mining. Like Refined Amber, this item was introduced before the introduction of the Crystal Hollows. "Rock" is not a type of Gemstone.

  • COMMON: +10 Mining Speed / +5 Mining Fortune / +0.4% Auspicious Bonus
  • UNCOMMON: +20 Mining Speed / +10 Mining Fortune / +0.5% Auspicious Bonus
  • RARE: +30 Mining Speed / +15 Mining Fortune / +0.6% Auspicious Bonus
  • EPIC: +40 Mining Speed / +20 Mining Fortune / +0.7% Auspicious Bonus
  • LEGENDARY: +50 Mining Speed / +25 Mining Fortune / +0.8% Auspicious Bonus
  • MYTHIC: +75 Mining Speed / +35 Mining Fortune / +0.9% Auspicious Bonus
  • DIVINE: +100 Mining Speed / +50 Mining Fortune / +1% Auspicious Bonus

Auspicious Bonus: Grants +???% Mining Fortune.

Frigid Husk

Designer's Note: Frigid Husk is intended to be the best Reforge Stone for Mining Fortune, but only when you are accumulating Cold. This is to further encourage mining in the Glacite Tunnels and Mineshafts, but it also has an active risk assessment element to the reforge bonus. Ironically, at high Cold you will be needing lots of Mining Speed, which this Reforge Stone provides none of!

  • COMMON: +3 Mining Fortune / +0.5 Glacial Bonus
  • UNCOMMON: +6 Mining Fortune / +0.7 Glacial Bonus
  • RARE: +9 Mining Fortune / +0.9 Glacial Bonus
  • EPIC: +13 Mining Fortune / +1.1 Glacial Bonus
  • LEGENDARY: +16 Mining Fortune / +1.4 Glacial Bonus
  • MYTHIC: +20 Mining Fortune / +1.7 Glacial Bonus
  • DIVINE: +25 Mining Fortune / +2 Glacial Bonus

Glacial Bonus: Grants +??? Mining Fortune per 1 Cold you have.

Lapis Crystal

Designer's Note: Lapis Crystal is another super early game Reforge Stone, being in the same category as Black Diamonds. This reforge goes all in on Mining Speed as opposed to the Black Diamond, which has some Mining Fortune. The reforge bonus has also been buffed so that early game players can earn more EXP while mining, meaning faster enchants.

  • COMMON: +10 Mining Speed / +25% Magnetic Bonus
  • UNCOMMON: +20 Mining Speed / +35% Magnetic Bonus
  • RARE: +30 Mining Speed / +45% Magnetic Bonus

  • DIVINE: +100 Mining Speed / +100% Magnetic Bonus

Magnetic Bonus: Earn more +???% EXP when mining.

Petrified Starfall

Designer's Note: Petrified Starfall has been changed to become a more general purpose Reforge Stone for mining. The caveat is that it now becomes the best reforge in the Dwarven Mines (by a significant margin) while you are near Fallen Stars, granting more Mithril Powder and Mining Fortune.

  • COMMON: +5 Mining Speed / +5 Mining Fortune / +8%/25 Stellar Bonus
  • UNCOMMON: +10 Mining Speed / +10 Mining Fortune / +9%/30 Stellar Bonus
  • RARE: +15 Mining Speed / +15 Mining Fortune / +10%/35 Stellar Bonus

Pure Mithril

Designer's Note: Pure Mithril is in the same space as Petrified Starfall, at its best while in the Dwarven Mines. The difference here is that Pure Mithril is better for those who like to mine more passively. While you won't be getting the bonus Mithril Powder and some or quite as much Mining Fortune, you won't have to move every time a new Fallen Star lands.

  • COMMON: +3 Mining Fortune / +10 Mithraic Bonus
  • UNCOMMON: +6 Mining Fortune / +15 Mithraic Bonus
  • RARE: +9 Mining Fortune / +20 Mithraic Bonus
  • EPIC: +13 Mining Fortune / +25 Mithraic Bonus
  • LEGENDARY: +16 Mining Fortune / +30 Mithraic Bonus
  • MYTHIC: +20 Mining Fortune / +40 Mithraic Bonus
  • DIVINE: +25 Mining Fortune / +50 Mithraic Bonus

Mithraic Bonus: Grants +??? Mining Fortune on Mithril and Titanium.

Scorched Topaz (renamed from Hot Stuff)

Designer's Note: Scorched Topaz has been reworked into a more competitive option for mining in the Magma Fields, much like a counterpart to the Frigid Husk, but for Heat instead. The item was renamed because frankly the old name was just not great, among other reasons.

  • COMMON: +5 Mining Speed / +3 Mining Fortune / +0.3/+1 Heated Bonus
  • UNCOMMON: +10 Mining Speed / +6 Mining Fortune / +0.4/+1.4 Heated Bonus
  • RARE: +15 Mining Speed / +9 Mining Fortune / +0.5/+1.8 Heated Bonus

Some of the participation requirements for events have changed:

  • Goblin Raid: 25 > 50 Kills
  • Raffle: N/A > 10 Tickets

► Other[]

➥ Bingo Changes[]

Due to significant changes to early game progression and requirements for mining, we have gone ahead and pre-emptively made changes to the Bingo Pet to counteract this.

  • New COMMON Perk: Mountain Climber
    • Increases HOTM XP gain by 100% - 250%
  • Since buffed HOTM XP now has its own standalone perk, Fast Learner no longer affects HOTM XP gain

We will be monitoring upcoming Bingo events to see if further changes are necessary.

➥ Crystal Nucleus Changes[]

You now need to re-complete the Crystal Nucleus in order to pick up Crystals again. Certain Crystals now also require re-completing their objectives in order for you to collect them again.

Designer's Note: This change was made as an anti-abuse measure for forging Perfect Gemstones. We are looking at potentially making other changes to hasten how quickly runs can be completed to compensate for this.

➥ Refactored Custom Blocks[]

With this update we have optimized how custom blocks function, and as a result we have had to make some changes to Sulphur Ore in the Crimson Isles.

  • You now need to be within 4 blocks when catching Sulphur Skitters
  • Mobs are no longer corrupted while near Sulphur Ore

➥ Railway Station Changes[]

We have removed the Gates to the Mines Railway Station and replaced it with a new station in the lower part of the Royal Mines (where many of the new Dwarven Ores are). In the past this was a fairly unknown place, and since it now has added relevance we decided to put a station here. The Gates to the Mines station was hardly ever used and was fairly close to the Dwarven Village station anyways, so we decided to swap it out.

➥ Rhys' Quest Changes[]

Rhys will now ask you for 15 total of any enchanted mining resource, instead of 10 enchanted resources for each of the 3 different types (3o total). Effectively this means you can use your leftover enchanted resources from going through the Deep Caverns without having to over-commit to just a few of them.

➥ Backend NMS Blocks & Entities Refactor[]

Separately to our changes to "custom blocks" in SkyBlock, some backend internals of our server software have been rewritten to accommodate more blocks and entities from newer versions of Minecraft. This is also being tested during this update's alpha cycle. If you notice anything weird with block placement/breaking, block hitboxes, entity behaviour, entity hitboxes, etc. please report those as we look to address them before Foraging.
