Fishing

 Fishing is one of the Skills available for players to level up by performing certain actions that give them Fishing XP.

Roman Numerals are used to express its levels in-game.

Although Fishing goes from levels 1-50, 50 XP is required to reach the first level, meaning there is a "level 0," just like all other Skills.

Leveling up Fishing Skill will give the player:

• ❤ Health
• Increased chance to fish up treasure
• Fishing coin treasures get multiplied by (1 + fishing level / 2.5)
• Ability to fish up tougher and more valuable Sea Creatures
• The ability to use better fishing gear, such as Challenging Rod, Rod of the Sea, Phantom Rod, Yeti Rod, Salmon Armor, and Shark Scale Armor
• Coins

Fishing

The player can fish by casting a Fishing Rod into  Water, Dirt or  Lava. After an amount of time, they will catch an item or Sea Creature.

Fishing Speed

Fishing Speed is the amount of time it takes the player to catch an item or Sea Creature.
The amount of ticks it will take for the player to catch something is calculated with this formula: $Ticks = (\text{random number between }400 \text{ and } (400 - 10 \times LureEnchantmentTier)) \times FishingSpeedMultiplier$
The amount of seconds this takes is calculated with: $\frac{Ticks}{TicksPerSecond}$. The amount of Ticks Per Second can vary, but is 20 by default.

The player's fishing speed multiplier can be increased with certain items:

Sea Creatures

Main article: Sea Creatures

When fishing, players have a chance to catch a Sea Creature. Sea Creatures are mobs which drop Fishing loot and Fishing XP when killed. The player's α Sea Creature Chance determines the chance they have to catch a Sea Creature.

As a player increases their fishing level, they unlock stronger creatures that give more XP and better loot. Killing sea creatures on the private island does not provide fishing XP.

Sea Creatures cannot be damaged with arrows directly, except those shot from  Prismarine Bow.

Runic sea creatures have a 50% chance to drop a Wake Rune upon death.

Drops

Items can be obtained from fishing if the player does not catch a Sea Creature. There are multiple factors that can change the chance of fishing up certain items. Each drop caught from fishing is rolled from a specific loot pool, depending on the type of catch the player gets. For example, if the player gets a GOOD CATCH!, the drop they will obtain is rolled from the GOOD CATCH! loot pool.

Treasure

A piece of Treasure (GOOD CATCH!) has a base chance of 5% to be fished up instead of a normal item. There is also a 10% chance to fish up a piece of Rare Treasure (GREAT CATCH!) instead of a piece of normal Treasure, or a 0.4% overall chance.

Treasure Hunter

Treasure Hunter is an ability exclusively unlocked by leveling up the Fishing Skill. Each level of Treasure Hunter grants an additional 0.2% chance to obtain treasure. Each level of Fishing grants one level of Treasure Hunter. For example, if the player was on  Fishing Level XV, they would have Treasure Hunter level 15, and +3% chance to fish up treasure. This can be increased to +25% at  Fishing Level L.

Luck of the Sea

Luck of the Sea gives +1% chance to fish up Treasure per level, up to +6% at level VI.

Location

Certain drops have a higher chance to be or can only be fished up in specific Locations. In certain locations, there is a 25% chance for the drop obtained to be rolled from a loot pool unique to the pond.

Trophy Fish

Trophy Fish can be occasionally caught while lava fishing in the Crimson Isle, with different requirements to catch each Trophy Fish. There are multiple tiers of each Trophy Fish: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond. They can be filleted by Odger to be converted into Magmafish. Catching more individual tiers of Trophy Fish can increase the player's Trophy Fishing level, allowing them to get rewards from Odger. Upgrading Trophy Fishing levels also allows the player to fish up stronger lava Sea Creatures and use better Fishing Rods and gear.

Tips

There are two types of fishing: Fishing for XP and Fishing for valuable drops. No matter which is being gone for, it is required to have as much ☂ Fishing Speed and α Sea Creature Chance as possible. When fishing for XP, getting as much ☯ Fishing Wisdom as possible is recommended. When fishing for valuable drops, get as much ✯ Magic Find as possible is recommended. If possible, use the Whale Bait, which is currently the best bait. If it is too expensive, Glowy Chum Bait or Fish Bait can be a good choice as well.

The current best Water Fishing Rod progression is the following:

•  Fishing 0-4: Prismarine Rod

Trivia

• There are currently 5 Fairy Souls that can only be obtained by fishing. Two of them can only be fished up in the Fairy Grotto.
• The Fishing Crystal that spawns with the pond island grants more frequent drops of Prismarine Shards and Prismarine Crystals.
• Daytime occurs between 6:00 am–7:00 pm whilst Night time occurs between 7:00 pm–6:00 a.m. It is also indicated by the sun or moon next to the time in the sidebar.
• There are two blocks on the Fairy Lake bed where there is fire underneath; however, it doesn't seem to serve any purpose at the moment.
• The Combat XP buffs from Slayer, Combat XP Boost Potion, Viking's Tear, or Accessories like Hunter Ring apply to Fishing XP earned from killing sea creatures.
• XP from Sea Creatures based on Zombies (Sea Walker, Monster of the Deep, Water Hydra) count for Zombie Slayer. Similarly, Lava Flames, the only Blaze Sea Creature, count for Blaze Slayer.
• The chicken of the Monster of the Deep drops more XP. But for a Runic Monster of the Deep only killing the Zombie yields a rune.
• Spooky fishing mobs can be caught whenever the Fear Mongerer is in the hub, not just during the spooky festival.
• The Deep Sea Orb and the Dragon Horn are the two reforge stones that give a reforge which affects fishing.
• Lava Fishing could be a reference to Terraria's lava fishing mechanic.
• The base coin yield from treasures before scaling with the fishing level is 1,000-21,000 in water and 500-10,500 in lava.
• The chance to get coins from treasures is estimated to be 31.8%±2.3%.
