Language Project for Translators is a translation scheme on Hypixel SkyBlock Wiki.
Introduction[]
Alongside International Wikis, the Language Project for Translators is set up for editors who are interested in translating the wiki.
Previously, one would need to set up a wiki to start translating. Setting up and maintaining a wiki is not an easy task. Although the English wiki has ramped up support for new international wikis, there is often a lack of editors interested to begin such a process. Under the Fandom platform, a wiki can be closed due to lack of activity, making the effort of gathering an editor base even harder.
It is not ideal that translating for new languages is unnecessarily hard. Editors that are interested in helping may unfortunately not participate or pick up the work by previous editors even if they want to.
With the introduction of Language Project for Translators, editors can now translate for the wiki on the English wiki, without setting up a new environment. When the community grows larger, the work can then forked to a new wiki, making it an actual wiki.
- Participants
Anyone can participate, start, or edit a Language Project. The English Wiki Discord has international channels for assistance and communications.
Getting Started[]
Starting a Project[]
First, check that if a language wiki or language project of a language has been created.
- Go to Project:Internationalization to check existing language projects.
If a language not existing, you may start a language project by first creating the Root Page. See #Page Organization for details. It is good to start with creating the first 3 pages, as it will qualify for placement on the main page.
It is also recommended to notify a wiki staff about a new project so that the project can be followed up accordingly.
Editing a Project[]
All pages in a project can be edited by anyone. You may also create a manageable amount of new pages - see #Page Organization for details.
"Core pages" are pages that discusses about main aspects of the game. Those pages are the most useful for players. The pages on navigation are examples of core pages. It is recommended to help create at least 10 core pages in the first 30 pages, covering main aspects of Hypixel SkyBlock.
An issue is that, when including templates (like {{Stat}}
), the displayed names cannot be translated. For simplicity, in a language project, those translations can be ignored. They can be translated after moving to an international wiki.
Details[]
Page Organization[]
All pages of a language project is located on the English wiki. A Language Project (LP) for a language is organized in the following way.
Root Page[]
The root page for an LP is Interlang:Langcode (replace Langcode with the language code). The language code in the title must be in Title Case where only the first letter is capitalized. For example, Swedish pages starts with Interlang:Sv.
The root page must start with {{Interlang Root}}
, for example {{Interlang Root|lang=Korean}}. The rest of the page can be customized by volunteers of that language project!
On the root page, there can be a welcome message, and anything that you want to show to new readers and editors. There can also be the state of the project, and a list of pages that exists, to help new editors navigate.
Article and Template Pages[]
All article pages of that Language Project are located on Interlang:Langcode/pagename (Replace pagename with the desired page name). New pages shall be created based on this rule.
All article pages should start with {{Interlang Page}}
. For example, for a page that is translating the Anita page: {{Interlang Page|code=ko|lang=Korean|english=Anita}}. This indicates which project and translation target the page is for on top of the page.
All template pages of that Language Project are located on Interlang:Langcode/Template/pagename (Replace pagename with the desired page name). {{Interlang Page}}
is not needed.
Although template pages may be created, it is recommended to leave most technical implementations for when the language wiki becomes a standalone wiki. Some part that rely on template or module implementation may remain in English.
Module Pages[]
All module pages of that Language Project are located on Module:Interlang:Langcode/pagename (Replace pagename with the desired page name). {{Interlang Page}}
is not needed.
Although module pages may be created, it is recommended to leave most technical implementations for when the language wiki becomes a standalone wiki. Some part that rely on template or module implementation may remain in English.
Project Stages[]
A language project has the following stages:
Stage | Criteria |
---|---|
Novice | The project reached 3 pages. This qualifies a placement on the International Wikis list on the home page to attract more editors to join the project. Also, the project qualifies for a project forums space on the Wiki Discord, used for team building and project organization. |
Apprentice | The project reached 10 pages with at least 3 core pages. This is the gold standard for good growth of a project. |
Expert | The project reached 30 pages with at least 10 core pages. The project has a good amount of pages and is on the track to successfully growing a community. |
Master | The project reached 50 pages, with at least 15 core pages and 3 active editors. The English wiki will consult the editors to move the project on a separate wiki and get the wheels turning on a new environment. |
