Page Protection is a tool that allows Administrators, Content moderators, and FANDOM Staff to lock down actions for a certain page for a set amount of time. The protection disallows anyone without the correct permissions to perform the action in question.
Levels of Protection
The three levels of page protection in the MediaWiki software are:
- Unprotected or All - Allows all users (no restrictions)
- Semi-Protected or Block new and Unregistered users - Disallows anyone without the "autoconfirmed" user right from preforming the action in question.
- Fully Protected or Administrators and content moderators only - Disallows anyone without the "Protect" permission from performing the action in question.
- There is an extra option for Full Protection - Cascading protection: When selected, this option protects all pages included in the protected page.
Reasons for Protection
- See Also: Wikipedia's Protection Policy
These are the reasons that justifies page protection:
- "Edit-protection" is used only because of excessive vandalism, spam, edit warring or it is a high-traffic page, or is a high-use template.
- "Create-protection" is only used for pages that have been deleted and should not be re-created.
- Any other reasons listed in the Types of Protection section.
A request for page protection or change in protection level may be posted on a content moderator's wall or an administrator's wall.
A Content Moderator or an Administrator may protect any personal pages at their discretion.
When protecting a page, please be sure to put {{Protected}}
on the article.
Protection Procedure
A Content Moderator or Administrator may protect a page at their discretion, provided that it meets the protection criteria, or is a personal page. If the article is a popular one, and it needs to be fully protected, it is advised to contact the administrators at Project:Administrator's Noticeboard.
Types of Protection
Move Protection
Move protection prevents anyone without the correct privileges from moving the page to a new title.
This type of protection is used when a page does not need to be moved, or the page in question has been subject to heavy page-move vandalism. Examples include Policy pages, Noticeboards, critical Wiki pages, and high-traffic articles.
This type of protection is often used in twain with Edit Protection.
Edit Protection
Edit Protection prevents anyone without the correct permissions from editing the protected page.
This is the most common type of protection, and is generally used in the following situations:
- The page in question has a high transclusion count
- The template in question is frequently edited
- The page in question has a history of vandalism
- The page in question is under an edit war/dispute
- The page in question is under an active edit (a Content Moderator or an Administrator may protect a page in this fashion at their discretion.)
A Content Moderator or an Administrator may protect any personal pages at their discretion.
This type of protection is often used in twain with Move Protection.
Upload Protection
Upload protection prevents anyone without the correct privileges from uploading a new version of the file in question or uploading the file in question.
This type of protection is generally used in the following situations:
- The file in question is subject to high rates of upload-vandalism
- The file in question is a high-use file
- The file in question is part of the Wiki's interface
A Content Moderator or an Administrator may protect any personal files at their discretion.
Create Protection
Create protection prevents anyone without the correct privileges from creating the page in question.
This should only be used when the circumstances dictate so; such as:
- The page in question is a spam article (See the Deletion Policy for more information)
- The page in question has been deleted/re-created multiple times.
- The page in question is under a title where no page should be created
- The page in question is the userpage of a blocked user
- The page in question is a system message (these can only be created by administrators)
Situations To Not Add Protection
- When a page is protected, it disallows a large percentage of contributors from adding to the article, thus hurting the Wiki.
- When a page is vandalized, it should not be protected just because of that. Page protection should be for as short a time as possible, while maintaining its effectiveness as much as possible.
- Talk pages should never be protected, unless the circumstances are extreme. If a situation warrants the talk page be protected, the Staff Member should notify affected users about the method to use the Project:Administrator's Noticeboard for appealing their rights.
