The King is one of a group of seven NPCs that are located in the ⏣ Royal Palace within the ⏣ Dwarven Mines. According to Tornora, "There isn't much going on in our caves", so "Most of their time is spent trying to decide who's going to be the next king".

There are seven NPCs that can be King, and at any given time, only one of them is the King. The King changes at the the end of each SkyBlock Day (every 20 minutes real time). Speaking to the King for the first time will allow the player to start Commissions. Speaking to all seven different Kings during their reigns rewards the player with a  King Talisman and the "A Royal Meeting" Achievement. As of patch 0.12, it is not possible to view which Kings the player has spoken to, but the player is told in chat how many different Kings they have spoken to each time they speak to a King that they haven't already spoken to. The seven NPCs always rotate counter-clockwise in their seats, which allows the order of the next Kings to be determined. The cycle is as follows:

What happens when you speak to the King for the first time?

Initiating a conversation with the King for the first time triggers the start of Commissions.
