Congratulations, you made it through the Entrance.
I have been watching you closely...
Unfortunately, for now, this is the end of the road.
I sense many dead spirits eager to return to the living..
I will bring some of them back. Watch this.

Title and Description[]

Stalker

This strange creature is roaming The Catacombs to add powerful adventurers to its collection.

The Fight[]

The Watcher will summon undead spirits from the display cases on the walls. Players can not directly damage the Watcher and must instead kill all the spirits in order to win the fight.

Players who are dead when the fight starts or die during the fight are reanimated as a hostile Wandering Soul that resembles the player who died. Killing a Wandering Soul will revive the player it resembles. These undead have very high Defense.

The Watcher will stop summoning spirits after set amount of Undead have been spawned. Players win the fight after they have defeated all the spirits, as the Watcher itself cannot be damaged. Attempting to damage the Watcher will cause him to zap the player.

This fight increases in difficulty and gains new mechanics on higher floors.

Arena[]

The Watcher's arena is fairly simple. There are 4 chains in the room with the Undead's and Player's heads on the wall. There are some corridors behind the Undead wall. A way to cheese the boss up to Floor III is to go on top of the portal, entrance door, or go on the second layer of the Undead. Keep in mind the top of the exit portal changes on every floor to represent the boss of that floor.

Floor 2[]

Starting from Floor 2, the Undead gain special perks according to their type.

Floor 3[]

During Floor 3, Bonzo is reanimated at the start of the fight. The reanimated Bonzo can perform his fireworks ability when brought down below 50% health.

Floor 4[]

On Floor 4 or above, the Watcher will be next to 2 Watchful Eyes, which deals heavy damage to players who attempt to stand on the pillars in the Blood Room. In the floor, Scarf has a chance to be the reanimated boss instead of Bonzo. Scarf can rarely use the Wither Barrage ability, dealing massive damage.

Floor 5[]

All mobs spawned by The Watcher gain a random modifier:

  • Speedy increases the mobs' speed, and gives a chance for the mobs to drop Dungeon potions on their respective floor on death.
  • Stormy allows the mobs to strike lightning on nearby players, and gives a rare chance to drop Thunderlord VI Enchanted Books on death.
  • Healthy increases the mobs' maximum health, and gives a chance to drop Healing Tissues on death.
  • Boomer makes the mobs drop primed TNT on death and drop Superboom TNT. (Note: The primed TNT deals 100% of the caught players' health as True Damage, meaning it instakills all players in range unless the player has Absorption or Wither Cloak Sword active.)
  • Stealthy makes the mobs invisible except for their name tags and armor.
  • Golden makes the mobs drop Gold Essence on death.

The modifier will be announced before the fight begins. For example, when Boomer mobs are summoned, The Watcher will announce "These will be stubborn and unwilling to change!" before the first summon.

The Spirit Bear now has a chance to spawn instead of Scarf and Bonzo and can drop Thorn Fragments.

Floor 6[]

The Watcher no longer announces the modifier of its summons before starting.

Livid now has a chance to be the blood room's reanimated boss. Livid, Scarf and Bonzo has a chance to drop their respective fragments upon death, which are used to upgrade dungeon items from their floors. for example, Livid Fragments can be used to upgrade Shadow Fury, Shadow Assassin Armor, etc.

Floor 7[]

At the beginning of the fight, before Bonzo, Scarf, Spirit Bear, or Livid is summoned, one of Sadan's giants (The Diamond Giant, Jolly Pink Giant, Bigfoot, or L.A.S.R.) will be reanimated. These giants possess the respective abilities of the Floor 6 Giants. The pillars will be removed in the arena, making space for the Giant, although there's a rare chance the pillars won't be removed. Each one has a chance to drop its respective Precursor Relic, which can upgrade Wither Armor dropped from Necron.

Battle Hints[]

  • If The Watcher says "You'll do.", "This guy looks like a fighter.", "Let's see how you can handle this.", "Go, fight!", "Hmmm... This one!", or "Go and live again!" he will summon a spirit.
  • Look at the display cases on the walls. You'll get a general idea of how the fight's going to be. Note that the Watcher will only summon some of the spirits in the cases.
  • Once The Watcher says "That will be enough for now." he will no longer summon spirits.
  • The Watcher is immune to Arrows and other ranged projectiles. Hitting him with one will deflect it and will make him shoot you with a laser.
  • One of the best ways to clear The Watcher summons is to use Ice Spray Wand ability on them, and use a high Damage weapon with Mage Beam to kill them.

Lore[]

  • Before becoming The Watcher, he was a human known as Lathrop, he was a pupil and adopted son of Dr. Emmett after his parents died during the Calamity. Ever since The Breach on top of the mountain has opened, Lathrop started getting visions of a floating eye.
  • One day he is asked by Dr. Emmett to deliver a letter to his colleague in Wilderness. He heads out and for some reason feels sad looking at the house he lived in. Entering the Inn, he was getting the feeling of Deja Vu. In the Inn he saw a man with black hair in black clothing. He recognized this from one of his visions. The mysterious man then leaves upstairs, a different man, a young assassin named Livid, comes to Lathrop and questions him about the mysterious man, since he claims to have never seen in the Inn before. Lathrop answers Livid's question saying that the mysterious man is a merchant from far away land, not knowing what lead him to say that since he in fact didn't know him. Livid then leaves back to his table and Lathrop too goes upstairs.
  • A while after, the mysterious man then left the Inn carrying Livid with him. Lathrop decides to follow him, as his feeling of Deja Vu grows stronger, despite him not remembering this. Necron figures out he is being followed and before the wooden entrance to The Catacombs he asks his pursuer, why is he following him. Lathrop explains his situation with visions and Deja Vu, then explains that he saw that by following Necron to his master, he will reach his full potential, as the door opened on their own, Necron urged Lathrop to follow him.
  • In Catacombs he meets The Wither King who leads him to his laboratory, in front of the Seeing-Stone, which immediately triggers a vision in him, he sees a house with a woman and a child inside, he recognizes the source of the command, Kaeman. The Wither King was impressed by Lathrop's natural abilities and in the following months, he made him use the Seeing-Stone again and again. Which transformed him to the limbless, one-eyed creature he now is.
  • Some time after, he was tasked to see Kaeman's past and use the orb to create a world, identical to the one Kaeman once knew, in which he could once again be happy. He has succeeded. Kaeman thanked the Watcher, which was a rare display from him and told him to be loyal to his new master - Necron, while he decided to stay in an enclosed chamber, dreaming of a happier time.
  • After the seclusion of their master, Necron decided to gather an army of necromancers for his goal and Watcher at some point wrote most of the Dungeon Journals. In 1531 AE, he watches the expedition to the Catacombs. He notices one particular member and his potential in necromancy, after learning his name, The Watcher decided to recruit Sadan.

Bugs[]

  • Flamer can deal damage to everyone in this server instead of an area around it.

Trivia[]

  • In the Journal - The Eye, it is shown that The Watcher was related to Sadan's interest in Necromancy.
  • The Watcher's eye resembles the Demon Eye from Terraria. This is further supported by the fact that both have a chance to drop item called "Optical Lens" upon their defeat.
  • The Watcher fight could be inspired by the first phase of the Brain of Cthulhu fight in Terraria, where it becomes invincible and it summons minions you must kill.
  • The Watcher will revive a player when their Wandering Soul was killed. If Wandering Soul is killed after the respective player was revived in an another way, the killing of a Wandering Soul won't have any effect.
  • The color of The Watcher's eye starts changing from a vivid green to a sickly yellow the deeper you go in the Catacombs, which slowly turns more orange when going into Master Mode.
  • It is probable that Watcher is older than Necron, since Necron went to academy until being taken by Kaeman and Watcher was in his thirties when becoming the Watcher.
  • Necron has a connection to The Watcher, calling it 'The Eye' by mentioning it in his first welcome speech.
  • It is implied that The Watcher cannot be killed.
  • One unknown undead refers to The Watcher as "Stalker" in the Dungeon Journal Aftermath.
    • "Stalker" is also The Watcher's epitaph in Mort's description of the Entrance floor.
  • The Watcher's original name, Lathrop, is a reference to Dr. Emmett Lathrop Brown, more commonly known as Doc, from Back to the Future, as is his father figure, Dr. Emmett.
