Right-Click Mages differ from other classes by relying heavily on ✎ Mana for ❁ Damage rather than ☠ Crit Damage and ❁ Strength. Whether the player is exploring Dungeons or fighting Bosses, this tutorial can teach them how to become an efficient right-click mage. The best Minecraft version to play Mage in is 1.8.9, although it is not the most performant, it has lots of modifications available to improve the player's Dungeoneering experience.
Note: Gear in this tutorial will be vaguely categorized in order of importance, with a higher emphasis on Dungeons than Slayers.
Recommended Weapons[]
These weapons are required or heavily recommended when playing as a Mage. These often have requirements such as a high Catacombs level or Combat. Taking into consideration these items' usually high requirements and their high prices, it is not recommended to play the Mage class in the early-game.
Status | Weapon | Requirements | Bazaar Cost | Notes | Suggested Enhancements | Optional? |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Very early-game | Catacombs 5 | A Dreadlord Sword is a decent budget Mage that shoots Wither Skulls, which have a large AOE. The requirement being Catacombs 5 makes this weapon even greater for early-game Mages. Early game mages do have the option to use their strongest weapon and go directly to the Bonzo Staff. The Dreadlord Sword also can be useful for mid-game mages due to the very low mana cost of 40. | None | No, unless you have the money to buy one of the weapons below before entering | ||
Early game | Floor I Completion | A Bonzo's Staff should ideally be the player's next weapon. It should cost no more than 3,500,000 coins on BIN auctions, and has a great firing rate with AOE ❁ Damage (area of effect). It is essential for any early to mid-game Mage. It is also used by end-game players to get the crystals in phase one of the Necron bossfight. It is recommended to get at least Ultimate Wise III on this weapon. | Heroic, Ultimate Wise III, Smite V, at least three stars | No | ||
Early Mid-game | Catacombs 10(Dungeonized) | 6,399,988 coins | A Frozen Scythe is recommended for all mid-game users. Its main utility is using it when low on ✎ Mana, due to its low ✎ Mana cost. It shoots out ice bolts that are slow and pierce through targets. It is recommended to get at least Ultimate Wise III on this weapon. | Heroic, Ultimate Wise III, Smite, Critical, Syphon | Yes | |
Mid-game | Floor IV Completion | 15,978,053 coins | A Spirit Sceptre is an essential mage tool. It's a powerful weapon that shoots player-controlled bats without a cooldown, that create a 6-block radius explosion, making it one of the best weapons to clear out rooms. However, it does have a high ✎ Mana cost, so ✎ Intelligence should be maximized to use it continuously. It is mandatory to get the Ultimate Wise V. | Heroic, Ultimate Wise V, Smite, Critical, Syphon, Giant Killer ( bosses ) Five Stars, at least Fine Sapphire | No | |
Mid-Game | Catacombs 10(Dungeonized) | 37,279,148 coins | A direct upgrade of the Frozen Scythe, it shoots the same ice projectiles with the addition of an explosion when it lands. With it's lower mana cost and a slow effect, it becomes better than the Spirit Sceptre with the only downside being it has a smaller area of effect and lower damage. | Heroic, Ultimate Wise V, Smite, Critical, Syphon, Giant Killer ( bosses ) Five Stars. | Yes | |
Late-game | Catacombs 22(Dungeonized) | 45,056,829 coins | The Yeti Sword ability can deal massive AoE damage and can kill any Tier 4 Slayer boss except Voidglooms within seconds. It is quite useful in Dungeons, but it is recommended to dungeonize it, which makes it require Catacombs 22. | Heroic, Ultimate Wise V, Smite, Critical, Syphon, Giant Killer ( bosses ) Five Stars. | No | |
Late-game | Catacombs 25(Dungeonized) | While it is one of the most expensive items in the game, the Midas Staff the second best weapon for late game and end game Mages. After it's dungeonized it is able to do over 5M ❁ Damage to mobs in Dungeons, but requires Catacombs 25. It is recommended to put Ultimate Wise V. This can be paired with the Yeti Sword as the player can swap between both of them without being slowed down by the cooldown. | Gilded, 5 Stars, and spam enchantments. | Yes | ||
End-game | Floor VII Completion | When a variant of the Necron's Blade is clean with no scrolls, it is not an amazing weapon, but once the player applies all 3 Necron Scrolls, this sword becomes INSANELY overpowered, able to demolish any enemy in one right click. It is recommended to use the Hyperion variant as it provides the most mana out of all the variants. It costs over 1,700,000,000 coins (With Wither Impact), It costs about 700,000,000 coins without. | Heroic, two Sapphires, Recombobulated, Fully booked, 5 stars, and as much enchantments as you can. | No |
Utility Items[]
All items below are for uses that aren't focused on damage but still incredibly useful.
Status | Weapon | Requirements | Bazaar Cost | Notes | Optional? |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Any | Zombie Slayer 1/3/6/7 | Varies | These items are very useful for squishy mages that don't have a reliable method of healing, but their one second cooldown can be bad for mages with low health, | No | |
Any | Varies | With high healing which isn't costly for Mana, these swords are usable in all stages of the game and are a great help for squishy mages. It's suggested to get a Ornate, just skip the standard one. | No | ||
Any | Combat XXII | A Fire Freeze Staff is basically an Ice Spray Wand, but with a longer start-up of 5 seconds. However, due to its very low cost (400,000 coins) and its very broad usage, it is advised to get this weapon as soon as you can. | Yes | ||
Mid-game+ | 8,280,186 coins | An Ink Wand deals great burst damage. However, with the projectile being small and slow-moving, and due to its 30 second cooldown, missing the ink bomb is devastating. However, in general, this is only going to be very useful in lower floors. | Yes | ||
Late-game+ | With a 5 second cooldown, the Ice Spray Wand is rarely used by Mages. Although it can sometimes be helpful with fighting Mini-bosses as it freezes them in place and makes them take extra damage. Overall, this is more of an archer or berserk support weapon. | No | |||
Any | While it's not used for ❁ Damage, the Rogue Sword's ability can be useful for gaining ✦ Speed. | No | |||
Any | AOTV requires Enderman Slayer 6 to craft, but not to use | AOTE: 202,948 coins AOTV: 4,378,656 coins | Similar to Rogue Sword, the Aspect of the End and Aspect of the Void are bad for damage, but incredibly useful for movement. This weapon is highly recommended for mages to use. | No | |
Late-game+ | Floor VI completion | The Giant's Sword can be a very overpowered weapon. It is commonly used for it's high-damaging ability, and it can also be used for the beam, which can deal millions of damage, due to the high base damage of the weapon. | Yes | ||
Mid-game+ | Zombie Slayer Lvl 5 | 1,291,940 coins | A Voodoo Doll slows and inflicts heavy damage over time to all targets struck. It can stack if multiple arrows managed to hit a single enemy. It requires Zombie Slayer Level 5 to be used. This weapon excels as a secondary weapon for fighting mini-bosses. | Yes | |
Mid-game+ | 7,553,314 coins | Although it was considered a good weapon when The Catacombs - Floor I had just released, it now is outclassed by most other weapons, and it is much more expensive than others, with it costing 7,553,314 coins. | Yes | ||
Mid-game+ | Combat 18 | The Aspect of the Dragons' ability to knock mobs away can be useful for early and even mid-game mages, to help them survive higher floors. Dragon Rage also has a base damage of 12,000, making it far more powerful than other early to mid-game weapons. However, it's not recommended to use this weapon as your primary damage source because its extremely limited range and large knockback prevents the user from spamming the ability. | Yes | ||
Mid-game+ | Depending on which weapon you are using
Zombie Slayer Lvl 7 (Reaper Scythe) Floor 6 (other 2) |
Necromancy is a very overpowered utility for mages. Buying one with a special soul on it (e.g. Master Floor Summons like a Terracotta) can deal both a lot of damage and have quite a lot of health. If you cannot get one with a good soul on it, it is best to buy a Summoning Ring, due to the Summoning Ring not needing to be held to get the soul of the mob you want. | Yes |
Other Weapons[]
These other weapons that deal ๑ Ability Damage are niche as they are often overlooked or under-powered. These are all optional.
Status | Weapon | Requirements | Bazaar Cost | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Early-game | 416,057 coins | The Golem Sword provides ❈ Defense, and while it's ability deals decent ❁ Damage early game, it is not recommended in Dungeons due to its high cooldown and the fact that users must be close to mobs to damage them. | ||
Early-Mid Game | 3,093,768 coins | The Leaping and Silk Edge Sword both provide a leaping ability that stuns all mobs struck. However, it should not be used for damage as users must travel to the enemies to damage them, which can be fatal as a squishy mage. However, they can be used as Movement, so it could be used as a better AOTE/AOTV. |
Recommended Armors[]
These armor pieces/sets either provide lots of Mana or have special abilities that can help you out as a Mage.
Status | Armor | Requirements | Bazaar Cost | Notes | Optional? |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Early-game | Combat 16 Catacombs 12(Dungeonized)Floor I |
9,292,176 coins (Wise) | Wise Dragon Armor provides lots of ✎ Intelligence and reduces ✎ Mana costs. Very good for early-game dungeons if not a dungeon item, but falls off on tougher floors. Due to the catacombs requirement decrease however, this armor set is now somewhat viable for Floor 3 and Floor 5. | No | |
Early-game | Catacombs 9 | While Zombie Soldier Armor doesn't provide ✎ Intelligence by itself, reforging it to Wise or Necrotic then starring it will provide far more ✎ Mana than Wise Dragon Armor. Due to its high ❈ Defense and ❤ Health stats, this is considered to be one of the best armors for low catacombs players. | Yes | ||
Early-game | Floor III | While Adaptive Armor is better than Zombie Soldier Armor in terms of damage, it is way worse in terms of ❤ Effective Health. Players should closely evaluate which one would be right for them. | Yes | ||
Early-game | Floor I | Bonzo's Mask allows players to have a second life while in Dungeon. When paired with starred Zombie Soldier Armor, it is a good budget Dungeons set, however, it should be replaced with the Dark Goggles or even Shadow Goggles if you don't use its ability. Even on higher catacombs level players, Bonzo's Mask may be useful in circumstances such as the boss fight of Floor VII, where a double life can save a run. | No | ||
Early-game | Dark Goggles allows players to deal +25% more ๑ Ability Damage to Undead Monsters, and since most of the mobs in the Dungeons are Undead, this can be very useful for dealing damage. It does however not provide any base ❤ Health or ❈ Defense. If this is chosen, it is recommended to use Zombie Soldier Armor to make up for the low ❤ Effective Health. | No | |||
Mid-game | Floor III Catacombs 16 |
Shadow Goggles are a direct upgrade to the Dark Goggles, granting more ✎ Intelligence and +35% ๑ Ability Damage. | No | ||
Late-game | Floor VII Catacombs 28 |
Wither Goggles are the final upgrade for Dark Goggles, granting even more ✎ Intelligence and +45% ๑ Ability Damage. | No | ||
Mid-Game | Floor IV | These boots are quite useful. With speed that outclasses Maxor's Boots when given fragments, and high base intelligence with a good ability, these boots are quite useful in all stages of the game. | No | ||
Late-game | Catacombs 15 | Super Heavy Armor is a direct upgrade of Heavy Armor. while it lacks Intelligence, it's high Defense is coveted for low Catacombs Level mages who don't have the requirement to use Necromancer Lord just yet. | Yes | ||
Late-game | Catacombs 7-21 | 4,872,000 coins-40,600,000 coins | Just like Super Heavy Armor, Perfect Armor is a Defense-focused set that improves the more you tier it up. It also has the addition of three Amethyst Gemstone slots allowing you to improve it's ❈ Defense even further. However, it's mostly outclassed by Necromancer Lord Armor as Tier 12 Perfect Armor requires Catacombs 21. By then, you have already unlocked Necromancer Lord. However, the lower tiers are useful as they can be used at the lower floors with a lower catacombs requirement. | Yes | |
Late-game | Floor VI | Precursor Eye gives an incredibly high amount of ❤ Effective Health. It also gives 222 ✎ Mana by default, and it is very good for higher floors due to its high ❤ Health buff. However, its damage is much less than Shadow or Wither Goggles due to their abilities. | Yes | ||
Late-game | Floor VI | Necromancer Lord Armor is one of the best armor sets for ❤ Effective Health, beating out Perfect Armor. It also gives 40 ✎ Mana. The helmet is not recommended as Precursor Eye, Bonzo's Mask, or Goggles are better. The chestplate may be too expensive for some players, so alternatives include a Perfect Chestplate or a Zombie Lord Chestplate. If a player can afford Necromancer Lord Chestplate and Leggings, it is recommended to use Perfect Boots instead of Necromancer Lord Boots as Perfect Boots will provide better ❤ EHP than Necromancer Lord Boots. You can even keep the armor pieces because of the extra Necromancy slots it provides extra Necromancy slots it provides except for the Necromancer Lord Helmet which can be replaced by a Reaper Mask. | No | ||
Late-game | Catacombs 25 | Zombie Lord Armor is a relatively unnoticed set that gives 20 ✎ Mana and ❁ Strength per piece, buffing both Mage Beam and normal right click attacks. Its ❤ Effective Health is also decent. | Yes | ||
Late-game | Floor VII | Goldor's Armor, much like Wither Armor, can be considered to be an upgrade to the Necromancer Lord Armor in Floor VII. It grants a 10% damage resistance to Wither sourced damage per piece. Goldor's Armor provides better ❤ Effective Health than Necromancer Lord Armor and isn't too much more expensive. | Yes | ||
End-game | Floor VII | Storm's Armor is the go-to for endgame mages as it alone gives 1150 ✎ Intelligence. Due to how much ✎ Int this armor provides, you can switch from ✎ Int accessory bag power to ❁ Strength/☠ Crit Damage power to improve your Mage Beam. If you can't afford the Chestplate, it can be switched with almost any of the above alternatives. Thorn Fragmented Spirit Boots are incredibly useful for speed and Strength while giving Intelligence, something that Mages lack. | No. |
Recommended Equipment[]
Status | Equipment | Requirements | Bazaar Cost | Notes | Optional? |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Early Game | Ender Equipment | Combat 12
( obtained in The End ) |
N/A | These are easily obtained in the End before you come to dungeons. You should use
these before you can replace them with better items. |
No |
Early - Mid Game | Balloon Snake | Floor One Completion | N/A | The Jump Boost II effect is beneficial, as you can jump right over flamethrower traps
and dodge crypt lurker bones. It also gives +10 Inteligence, which is better than the Ender Necklace |
Yes |
Mid Game | Adaptive Belt | The Adaptive Belt only really gives +25 Inteligence. It's small, but slightly better than the Ender
Belt. Switch this with the Implosion Belt as soon as you can. |
Yes | ||
Mid - End Game | Implosion Belt | Combat 22 | The Implosion Belt should last you forever. It buffs all explosive damage by 25%,
which will be your main weapon because most people go Dreadlord Sword -> Bonzo Staff -> Spirit Sceptre -> Hyperion ( You might also go 100m Midas Staff or Yeti Sword |
No | |
Late Mid Game | Soulweaver Gloves | These can be used, but are geared towards Berserks and Tanks, but you can use them to stun minibosses if you need to. | Yes |
Recommended Pets[]
Having a good mage pet can greatly improve the player's mage abilities. Listed below are some recommended pets.
Status | Pet | Requirements | Bazaar Cost | Notes | Optional? |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mid-game | The Guardian Pet grants a good deal of ✎ Intelligence. A good ❁ Damage dealing pet For early and mid game mages that cannot afford the better pets. Its LEGENDARY variant has an updated ability that increases ✎ Mana regeneration, and doubling said regeneration when near water, which can be useful in the Professor boss fight. It also can be easily leveled up through the Experimentation Table. | Yes | |||
Mid-game | 1,749,442 coins | The Wither Skeleton Pet, while not exactly geared for mages specifically, its LEGENDARY Death Touch debuff stacks well with the high damage output from beam attacks. It also provides additional damage to Wither mobs, which may help in certain rooms littered with Withermancers or bosses like Necron, seeing as the former cuts down ability damage by 80% players may find themselves dealing more ❁ Damage with this pet against the mobs that the Sheep pet wouldn't help with. | Yes | ||
Mid-game+ | 11,206,689 coins for LEGENDARY | The Blue Whale Pet is known for improving Mages' poor survivability especially when using sets that cater mainly towards mana. This pet applies multiplicative buffs to ❤ Health and indirectly, ❈ Defense. This buff is well suited for the large buffs in dungeon, allowing Mages to reach over a million effective health even without any health or defense reforges. | Yes | ||
Late-Game | The Black Cat Pet is mostly for players with Hyperion and Storm's Armor. The ✦ Speed buff from this pet is useful as mages are notoriously slow. | Yes | |||
Mid-End Game | 2,373,724 coins | The Sheep Pet is an effective pet that provides ✎ Mana reduction on abilities and increased ๑ Ability Damage. It's LEGENDARY ability also grants up to 20% more ✎ Intelligence while in Dungeons, making it the best pet to use for raw ๑ Ability Damage as the buff keeps scaling up. In addition, as an Alchemy pet, it is fast and easy to level up. The legendary Sheep Pet is a must have for right click mages because of its multiple perks that grant more mana and also reduce the cost. | No | ||
End-game | This pet is incredibly expensive. Although it's abilities are geared towards doing Blaze Slayer, it's Legendary perk, Ephemeral Stability, greatly increases mana regen. | Yes | |||
End-game | Although not exactly geared for Right-Click Mages, it's Legendary Treasure perk boosts magic damage as well. | No |

Tips[]
- Jump from these setups
- Entrance, F1: 3/4 Wise Dragon Armor, Dreadlord Sword, Dark Goggles, Sheep Pet
- F2, F3: Wise Dragon Armor, Bonzo's Staff, Dark Goggles
- F4: Wise Dragon Armor, Bonzo's Staff, Shadow Goggles, Bonzo's Mask
- F5: Wise Dragon Armor, , Spirit Sceptre, Shadow Goggles, Bonzo's Mask
- F6: 1/2 Necromancer Lord Armor, Spirit Sceptre, Perfect Chestplate, Shadow Goggles, Bonzo's Mask
- F7: 1/2 Necromancer Lord Armor, Spirit Sceptre, Perfect Chestplate, Shadow Goggles, Bonzo's Mask
- Best Setup: 3/4 Storm's Armor, Wither Goggles, Hyperion
- Shooting a slow-moving projectile from a weapon like the Bonzo's Staff, then swapping to a weapon with higher ✎ Intelligence (i.e. the Spirit Sceptre) would cause the flying projectile to apply the held weapon modifiers (Enchantments, ✎ Intelligence etc.) for damage.
- Right-Click Mages are slower than other classes, so you may want to get a Black Cat Pet or Spirit Boots
- They are also very squishy, so get a decent healing source, like a Ornate Zombie Sword or a Wand of Mending, and don't go for the warriors in F2
- Sharpness should not be used, for it only boosts melee damage. Smite is better, because most mobs in dungeons will be undead ( Crypt Lurker, Super Tank Zombie, Skeletor, ect )
- Mana Steal can be placed on a weapon. It can be put on your Frozen Scythe, Aspect of the Dragons, or Aspect of the End.
- In Thorn Fights, place a Decoy in the stands. This lures masses of spirit animals into a corner, where you can just launch Spirit Sceptre bats or Bonzo's Staff balloons. This will also lure the Spirit Bats, who cannot break decoys, so you can use your Mana Steal weapon on them. Also, use the Aspect of the Dragons ability to blast away Spirit Chickens
- Try to get a timer. When your Bonzo's Mask's charge is used, set the timer for 360 seconds, start it, and switch to your goggles. ( Dark, Shadow, or Wither )
- Guided Sheep can be used to break open weak walls / crypts and also deals decent AOE damage. Use your ultimate, Thunderstorm, at bosses ( for F2, do second stage, F3, first stage, F4/F5, anytime )
